NEW LONDON - Sheffield Joseph Halsey Sr. died Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at his home in New London, at the age of 92.

Mr. Halsey was born Feb. 13, 1920, in Forest Hills, N.Y., the son of Benjamin Schuyler Halsey Sr. and Katharine Cecelia Walsh. Mr. Halsey was a graduate of the Canterbury School, New Milford, Conn., in 1937 and Princeton University in 1941. He was a World War II Navy veteran who served as the commanding officer of a subchaser in the Pacific.
Mr. Halsey made his career as a private investor and resided in Ossining, N.Y., for more than 20 years, before retiring to New Hampshire in 1977. He served as a member of the Board of Advisors of New Hampshire Thrift Bancshares Inc. He was a generous benefactor of many organizations, including New London Hospital, Mary Hitchcock Medical Center, Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Lake Sunapee Region VNA, Canterbury School and Princeton University He married Louise Purse Gale in October 1948 and survived her passing in December 1992.
Surviving Mr. Halsey are his wife, Virginia Noonan Halsey; two daughters Sharon Halsey Stiteler of Glen Mills, Pa., and Katherine Halsey Nailor of New Canaan, Conn.; four sons: Sheffield Joseph Halsey Jr. of Bedford, Mass., Stephen Lewis Halsey of Manchester, Schuyler Thomas Halsey of Martinsdale, Mont., and Michael Andrew Halsey of Bath.
Mr. Halsey also left behind his 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was a loving stepfather to Virginia's children and grandchildren.
SERVICES: Funeral services will be held Nov. 14, 2012, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Church, New London. Private burial will be in the family plot at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.
