ALTON - Shirley G. Copeland, age 94, of Letter S Road in Alton, died and went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 7, 2013.

Born Feb. 2, 1919, in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of Edwin W. and Minnie Warren (McIntyre) Petrie, she resided there for many years and moved to Alton in 1967.

Shirley was retired from General Electric in Lynn, Mass., where she worked in the office. She was a member of the O.E.S. in Lynn. A former member of Lynnfield Street Baptist Church in Lynn, since 1930, she was a member of True Memorial Baptist Church in Rochester; since 1971 having served as a deaconess and member of the decorating committee. She was a member of the choir at both churches.

Shirley loved the Town of Alton. She served in two elected positions, as a trustee at the Gilman Library for 36 years, from 1974-2011, their treasurer from 1990-2011 and as trustee of the trust funds for the town of Alton from 1993-2002 and 2004-2008.

She was a member of the Alton Garden Club and the Alton Historical Society.

An avid traveler, she had visited Kenya, Chile, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Greece, England, Scotland, British Virgin Islands, Aruba, Bermuda, Alaska, Hawaii and the Canadian Rockies.

She loved to cook. Her hobbies included, painting, braiding, quilting, gardening, playing the organ and piano. She loved to sing; a hiker, she had skied Tuckerman's Ravine. She loved camping and especially loved the beach. Shirley enjoyed meeting people and sparking a conversation. Shirley's greatest treasures, her faith and her family.

Widow of the late Harold A. Copeland and Ernest R. Gosselin, she is survived by her son Gary B. and wife Gayle Gosselin, daughter-in-law Pamela Gosselin, grandsons Tyler and Christopher, a niece Doris and husband Richard Fink, a niece Patricia Greene, a nephew David and wife Helen Greene, a nephew Richard and wife Erin Greene, 11 grand nieces and nephews, also many great grand nieces and nephews.


SERVICES: Calling hours are Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Peaslee Alton Funeral Home, 12 School Street, Alton. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 10 a.m. at True Memorial Baptist Church, Ten Rod Road in Rochester, with Rev. Rick Lamirande, pastor, officiating.
