AMHERST - Stanley Ross Samsky, 65, of Amherst, died at home on the morning of Feb. 9, 2013, after a long illness.

Stan was born in 1947 in Detroit to Abraham and Esther Samsky.

He attended Stuveysant High School in New York City, graduated from the University of Minnesota and received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley. He taught college math and then began working in the defense industry in the early 1980s. He retired from BAE Systems in October 2012.

He loved his family, animals, science-fiction movies, physics, mathematics and challenging classical music. He enjoyed contract bridge, hiking and bicycling.

He is survived by his wife, Mardee; and his son, Ari; his sister-in-law, Tina Forcey; his niece, Jamie Smith; and his brothers-in-law and their spouses, Jay Kolaya and his wife, Linda, Donald Kolaya and his wife, Annemarie, and Teddy Kolaya and his wife, Kim.

A service for the immediate family was held Feb. 14.
