CANDIA - Walter H. Rand Jr. died on Aug. 4, 2012, after a long illness. He was a resident of Candia for 42 years. 

Walter was born in Lewiston, Maine, on Jan. 26, 1935. He was the son of Walter H. Rand Sr. and Margaret (Karkos) Rand of Lewiston-Auburn, Maine. He graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine in 1953. 

He married his wife, Patricia A. (Breen) Rand, of Lewiston, Maine, in 1959. After high school, Walter served in the Army. He thereafter attended Bates College, where he graduated with a degree in liberal arts. Walter was well-known as a professional musician (trumpet).

Prior to his retirement, Walter had been employed in the insurance industry, where he was a claims manager. 

He was a member of the American Legion and served as a member of the Board of Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester. 

Walter is survived by his wife, Patricia; his mother, Margaret (Karkos) Rand; his children, David Rand of Chester, and Kathleen (Rand) Collimore and her husband, Kevin G. Collimore, of New Boston; his grandchildren, Hannah, Mary Elizabeth, and Patrick Collimore, of New Boston; his sister and her husband, Martha and Del Borden, of Lake Helen, Fla.; his cousin, Steve Karkos and his wife, Brenda, of Reading, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. 

Walter was predeceased by his father, Walter H. Rand Sr. of Auburn, Maine.


SERVICES: A memorial Mass will be held at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish, Meetinghouse Road in Bedford at 10 a.m. on Aug. 11. The Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium assisted with the arrangements. For more information or to view an online guestbook and memorial, please go to
