BEDFORD - William A. Swanson, 88, passed at his home in Bedford, surrounded by his family on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013.

He was born to Blanche M. Mahoney and Axel G. Swanson on Dec. 24, 1924, in Manchester. He was a loving husband to his wife, Helen, for 63 years and was a dedicated father and family man.

Bill served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was the proud owner of Swanson Die Co., Inc. for 64 years, which he co-founded with his father in 1949. An industrious and honorable man, he worked every day of his life and never retired. Bill was a 32nd degree Freemason at the Masonic Temple Washington Lodge 61 in Manchester, and was a Noble of the Bektash Shriners of Concord. He was also an active member of the Cutting Die Institute, the New England Shoe Foremen and Superintendents Association, Pointer Fish and Game, and the Model A Ford Club of America.

Bill was an avid car enthusiast, enjoyed swimming, boating, and waterskiing and loved spending time with his family. He had a quick wit and a playful sense of humor. Bill will be remembered for his generous heart, his willingness to help others in need, and his loving demeanor. He will be deeply missed.

His family includes his wife, Helen; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith Cassidy and her husband, Alfred, and Janice Patteson and her husband, Timothy; two grandchildren, Joseph and Jennifer Bulcock; and one great-granddaughter. Bill was preceded in death by his parents.


services: Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30, in Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut St., Manchester. An additional hour of calling will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, in Goodwin Funeral Home. Burial in Bedford Center Cemetery will take place in the spring.
