Gudbjorn Karlsson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 5, 2012.
MAINE - Gudbjorn "Bjossi" Karlsson, D.O., a dedicated physician, husband, father, son and friend, passed away in Colorado on Feb. 29, 2012, following a sudden illness.

He leaves his loving wife, Dr. Julia Woods Karlsson; devoted daughters, Nika Kroyer Karlsson and Anya Kroyer Karlsson; parents, Karl and Bergthora Asmundsson of Gilford, N.H.; brothers, Johann Ingi Asmundsson and Karl Runar Karlsson of New Hampshire and Godson, Oskar Mark Karlsson, of New Hampshire; grandfathers, Gudbjorn Gudjonsson and Asmundur Bjarneason, both of Iceland; dogs, Banjo and Sterling; and cats Surtsey, Kiki and Suki.

Bjossi, or BOC, or Dr. Karlsson, or Doc BOC, lived a full life of love, sport, family and adventure. Bjossi channeled his vast energy into loving his family, healing the sick, spending time with his deeply loved extended family of friends, strengthening his connection to his Icelandic heritage, and pursuing an active sporting life outdoors, through all seasons. Throughout his youth Bjossi excelled in tennis and downhill ski racing, and any other ventures he devoted himself to.

Bjossi accomplished all of this with his trademark enthusiasm and magnetism that kept a broad range of close friends in his orbit, friends dating as far back as secondary school, and many more that he gathered along the way. He was, to those close to him, an iconoclast, the real deal.

As a father, a brother, a husband, and a son, Bjossi was an embracing, caring man. Bjossi deeply loved his wife, daughters, parents, grandparents, and brothers. Bjossi was an expresser of this love for all to see and know. His love was beautiful, warm, comforting, reassuring and extremely cherished. Bjossi was also a grouch at times! However, this was only another of his approaches to articulate his love to those closest to him – never far removed from tenderness and caring.

Bjossi's family extends with deep family commitments in Iceland, on the main island and on Vestmannaeyjar, with an abiding connection to his Icelandic family heritage and ancestry. His family of grandfathers, aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles, and cousins were a priority for Bjossi, with frequent travels to Iceland to visit. Bjossi had a particularly close relationship with his maternal grandfather, Afi Gudbjorn, who was Bjossi's hero and a formative influence in the character of man that he grew to be.

Dr. Karlsson graduated from Bates College with a bachelor's of science in 1989, and went on to earn his D.O. from the University of New England's College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1999. He completed his residencies at Eastern Maine Medical Center and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He was an accomplished medical researcher, and published well-regarded papers on neurological and cardiovascular topics in "Brain Journal," "The American Journal of Physiology" and "Neuroscience Research," among others. Along the way, Bjossi also picked up an M.Sc. in aquaculture from the University of Bergen in Norway, which included research on the Icelandic grey seal population that gave him great pride in contrast and addition to his accomplishments in medicine.

Dr. Karlsson spent his distinguished medical career practicing in the state of Maine, where he was an attending physician in the emergency medicine department at Inland Hospital in Waterville. At Inland Hospital Dr. Karlsson achieved the distinction of assistant director of the Emergency Department. Bjossi was a respected member of the local Newport, Maine, community, where he lived in his idyllic home on Durham Bridge Road, on the shores of Sebasticook Lake.

Bjossi Karlsson is dearly loved and will be deeply missed.

I met Dr. Karlsson for the first time in the ER on Christmas Day, 2011. I thought I was having a heart attack and Dr Karlsson spent 4 1/2 hours running tests and caring for me. His manner was very professional, but more importantly, he was considerate, compassionate and reassuring. He seemed to be a man who could have easily become a friend to anyone. I am truly sorry for the loss of your loving husband and father.

To the Karlsson family,
My sincerest condolences go to you.
Dr. Karlsson saw to my injuries due to a snow blower accident of January of 2011. Thanks to his astute knowledge, medical training and immediate reaction on knowing exactly what to do, my fingers today are very close to being normal again. It has taken me over a year to fully heal, and if not for Dr. Karlsson, my index and middle fingers might not be attached to my hand today.
Again, my wife and I want to extend our most heart felt sympathies to Dr. Karlsson's family, and especially, his wife, Dr. Julia Woods, who was at Inland the accident happened.

Sincerely
Scott and Lee-Anne Folsom, North Vassalborough, Maine

Karlsson Family,
So sad to hear of BOCs passing much too soon.
My Mom always spoke very highly of all of you when she worked for you for a few years.Your family was very good to her,Thank you for that. Once when my daughter came with her to work, Boc it seemed wouldn't let her "work" he gave her rides I believe on the Jet Ski which kept her talking for days. This so the type of man BOC was. May Gods arms embrace you in your time of need. And help you to remember the wonderful times you had with him.
God Bless...Paul Carter Etna Me.

When I got the news that Bjossi had passed away I was shocked. That was soon replace with the thoughts of Julia, and the girls. I have worked with both Bjossi and Julia at Inland. The hole in my heart is huge and I want to send my love and sympathy to the family, friends and coworkers. God took a rock away from us all, but heaven gained a gem!

To the Karlsson family I give my deepst sympathy. I actually had just spoken to BOC before his trip as he called me on a mutual patient. We were planning on going out and catching up when he got back. I was so shocked. He helped me with my Boards during medical school and we did research together. I always enjoyed my time with him. I would also like to share that the patient he called me on was seen by him for being acutely suicidal. She told me he made her feel very comfortable and treated her with compassion. He clearly saved her life that night and she was amazed that he took the time to call me to help develop a support system for her. He will be greatly missed by many and impacted countless lives.

My heart goes out Julia, Anya, Nika, his family and friends. I just wanted people to know that at Bates, when cooler heads were needed in crazy situations, BOC, was the first to gather his wits and help those of us over-served or in distress. I think what I remember most is that mischievous twinkle in his eye, as if some magic might be waiting to come out, and when it did, you got the biggest smile that came along with all of the shenanigans that followed. When he spoke to me, I knew I had a friend. I hope he felt the same about me. I miss my friend dearly. Nick

To Julia, Nika, Anya and all the BOC extended family members: Please accept my deepst sympathy for your loss. Words can't explain or put into perspective how much BOC meant to me personally and profesionally while working with him at Inland in the last few years. My daughters will always remember the fun we had with him and the girls on the lake with the jet ski and tubing around, as well talking at work how much BOC loved the 3 ladies in his life.

To All of Bjossi's Family;
Please accept our most sincere condolences for your loss. I know Bjossi absolutely adored his daughters Anya and Nika, as well as his beautiful wife, Julia. He was so proud of and devoted to them and all his family. He was truly a kind and caring person. He loved helpinghis patients. His intelligence and friendly personality combined with his wonderful work ethic made him one of the best doctors.
Work will not be the same, but all who did work with him will often think of him while on the job. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge as he worked, and others learned many things from him.
Again, please accept our deepest sympathies. You will all be in our prayers and thoughts.
