MANCHESTER - Claire (Picard) Smith, 82, of Manchester, beloved wife of Gerald Smith, passed away March 11, 2014, at Villa Crest Nursing and Retirement Center, Manchester, surrounded by her loving family.Born in New Bedford, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Emile and Alice (Marcoux) Picard. Raised and educated in Manchester, she was a graduate of St. George High School, Class of 1949, and matriculated to New Hampshire College, achieving her bachelor's degree in accounting.The vice president of Johnson-Smith Window Fashion, Claire took great pride in her 50-year business career, retiring at 77 years of age. During retirement, Claire enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and traveling with Gerry to Florida.A dedicated wife and mother, Claire's family was paramount in her life. She was proud of each of her three children's many achievements. The stitching that kept her family together, Claire demonstrated her great love for her family through her sewing and cooking. In her younger years, Claire enjoyed organizing dinner parties and entertaining her many friends in her home. A master planner and organizer, Claire was actively involved in her children's events as a member of the Trinity High School Parents Association. Her children fondly remember the Champagne Ball Claire organized annually at Trinity, 1972-1984. A treasured wife, mother, grandmother and friend, she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.In addition to her devoted husband, Gerald, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage, Claire is survived by her son, Kenneth Smith of Bow; her two daughters, Debra Smith of Hooksett and Lisa Thorne of Hooksett; her four adoring grandchildren, Kaylee, Kristie, Griffin, and Madison; and extended family and friends. The family would like to extend their gratitude to their new extended family at Villa Crest Nursing and Retirement Center for their outstanding care and friendship provided to Claire during her stay there.


SERVICES: A memorial gathering will be held in the Phaneuf Funeral Home, 243 Hanover St., Manchester, on Saturday, March 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. with a memorial service at 5 p.m. Friends and relatives invited. For further information, please visit
