BOSCAWEN - Mary Eileen (Whitmore) Deeg, 97, passed away peacefully April 16, 2014, at the Merrimack County Nursing Home following a short period of declining health.She was born March 26, 1917, to Mary (Murphy) and Arthur Whitmore. She spent most of her childhood on Manchester's West Side, graduating from West High School in 1935.In 1937, Mary married her high school sweetheart, Russell J. Deeg. Prior to his death in 1995, they shared 57 years of marriage that were sometimes loud but never dull. They raised two daughters, Judith and Maureen, and gave generously of their time and living space to help raise four grandsons.The Deegs traveled to Las Vegas, Quebec, Niagara Falls, Florida, the Baseball and Basketball Hall of Fames with their grandchildren, and often to Hampton Beach. With her daughters, Mary traveled to Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Majorca, Spain.At 14, Mary found her calling when she went to work at Woolworth's on Elm Street. She was full of energy and loved retail. During a nearly 50-year career, she worked at several of Manchester's finest stores, including Leavitt's, Machinist's, and Hill's.Following their retirements, Mary and Russell spent nearly 15 years in the St. Petersburg, Fla., area hosting a stream of family and friends from New Hampshire. Never one to enjoy sitting still, Mary went back to work part-time in Florida, including a stint at a McDonald's in her early 70s. She also traveled to California multiple times.She returned to New Hampshire after Russell's death, living in Manchester and Concord. Mary volunteered at the CMC gift shop and at WEVO-Concord until she was nearly 90.Mary was predeceased by her husband Russell J. Deeg; her daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Randall Packard; her twin brother Daniel Whitmore and his wife Rita; brother Arthur Whitmore and his wife Bernice "Bunny"; and sister Helen (Whitmore) and brother-in-law Gerald Scannell.Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Maureen and G. Wells Anderson of Concord; four grandsons; Craig Bergeron of Hooksett; Curtis Bergeron and his wife Diane, of Hooksett; Cory Bergeron and partner Belinda Bureau of Manchester; and Jeffrey Langan and his wife Joanne Normandin of Natick, Mass.; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.


services: A memorial service will be held in the Shaw Chapel at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Bedford, on Friday, April 25, at 11 a.m. followed by an urn burial.
