UNITY - James Barry Dixon, 81, formerly of Maple Manor in Newport, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at Sullivan County Health Care in Unity, where he has been a resident for the past few years.

Barry was born in Newark, N.J., Aug. 5, 1932, son of the late James Henry and Beatrice (Paige) Dixon. He grew up in Newport, graduating from Towle High School in the class of 1950. He served in the U.S. Navy during the 1950s, and owned several convenience stores in Vermont and New Hampshire over the years, and worked at Shaw's from 1986 to 2003, when he retired due to health issues. He was married to Anna (Goyette) for over 20 years. Barry enjoyed golf and fishing, cruises in the Cayman Islands and trips to the ocean in Maine.
He is survived by his close companion, Anna Dixon, of Newport; his two sons, Thomas J. Dixon of North Providence, R.I., John T. Dixon of Florida; his daughter, Margaret J. Gahagan of Dumfries, Va., and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas P. and John B. Dixon.
services: A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at St. Patrick's Church, 32 Beech St. in Newport. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery with Fr. Michael Monette as celebrant. Military honors conducted by the Brewster-Gould-Lee-Rollins Post 25 will be observed. Friends may call on the family from 2 to 4 p.m. or from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main St., Newport.
