George Naum Obituary

MANCHESTER - George S. Naum, 88, of Manchester, died July 16, 2016, at Community Hospice House in Merrimack, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Manchester on December 21, 1927, to Hercules and Evanthia (Stevens) Naum. He was raised in Manchester, graduated from West High School in 1945, and was a lifelong resident of the area. George was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1946, serving in the Korean War. It was in the Army that he became a photographer. He studied photography at Camp Polk, La., the Army's Signal Photo Center (once a Paramount Photo Studio) in Astonia, N.Y., and in New Haven, Conn. Before leaving the Army in 1951, George was chosen to provide the pool photos during peace talks in Kaesong, North Korea, which were given to wire services and sent all over the world. Those photos were published by Time, Life, Newsweek and The Associated Press.
In addition to photography, George made model airplanes within the Army, which were used as government spotters.
When George returned to Manchester, he became a photographer with the Manchester Union Leader. He spent 45 years recording the history and events of the general news and sporting events through the eye of his camera.
George was a member of Sweeney Post, American Legion, VFW and Korean Veterans Group of NH. He was a longtime volunteer at Manchester City Hall and the Historical Society, from which he received the Historical Prevention Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. He was an active alumni member of West High School, was in the Athletic Hall of Fame and had been honored by various ball teams in many states.
Aside from his passion of photography, George was an avid fly fisherman, skier and golfer and had been a caddy for many years. He also enjoyed woodworking and fixing things. George will be remembered as a respected photographer and colleague, and a phenomenal friend. Above all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Sadie (Loughlin) Naum, in 2000 and by his parents and his longtime companion, Helen M. Hogan, in May of this year.
The family includes two daughters, Pamela Naum of Manchester and Patricia Ryan and her husband John of New Boston; one son, Kevin Naum and his wife Cynthia of Manchester; four grandchildren, Randy and Richard Naum of Manchester, Melissa Soucy and her husband, Kevin, of New Boston and Christine Golden and her husband Eric, of Cambridge, Mass; two greatgrandchildren, Samantha Strausbaugh of New Boston and Wyatt Golden of Cambridge, Mass.; and two sisters, Effie and Julia Naum, both of Manchester.
.
SERVICES: Calling hours are Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St., corner of North St., Manchester. The funeral service will be private. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Hospice House, 210 Naticook Rd., Merrimack, NH 03054. OH MY GOSH:THREE YEARS ALREADY HAVE GONE BY SINCE THE GENIAL GEORGE NAUM PASSED AWAY. IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY THAT WE SAT A THE NORTH END DUNKIN DONUTS AND TRADED STORIES OF OUR PAST ASSOCIATIONS WITH THE MANCHESTER UNION LEADER.

ONE OF THE TRUE PLEASURES OF MY DAYS SPENT IN MANCHESTER WAS BUMPING INTO GEORGE AND SITTING DOWN WITH HIM TO TALK ABOUT OLD TIMES.

YOU ARE TRULY MISSED MY OLD FRIEND.

LOVE, RAY VALLIERE SR.

I was just looking at an old picture that Mr. Naum had taken and was posted on the FB site for Manchester, NH. I realized that I had some classes with Pam Naum, while at West High, class of 72. I had not realized that her father had passed away, but in just seeing this I would like to send my condolences to the family in this loss. I realize that it was 2+ years ago, but the sentiments are the same. It is so very hard to lose a family member, and just hoping that the family has found peace. Take care, Elizabeth Rohde

I no longer live in the area, so I just heard of George's passing. I used to work at the historical society and for years I spent time with him each Saturday as he was going through his photograph negatives. He was the most accomplished person I have ever met and loved every story he told me. I will miss him dearly but I will cherish my memories of him. Thank you George. My condolences to his family and friends.

A big loss. Mr. Naum to me (he worked at the Union Leader with my father). I was introduced to him as a little girl but we saw one another through the years and he would walk by my home in Bedford and always stop to talk. He was a very soft spoken and pleasant man. I will miss speaking with him. Eveline (Savoie) Provencher

Sorry for your loss, I met George when I worked in the Engraving Dept. in 1953. George allways had time to talk and often I would develop his picture when I would fill in the dark room. He always had a joke and even though I was learning the dark room he was kind and helped. we both Graduated from West so we had that in common. When I came home on leave from the service I would go visit and made sure I saw him. He was a great guy, and will be greatly missed

My deepest sorrow for the loss of George Naum. He was truly loved by many and showed us all how to be a servant of God. George was my tax client for many years. We would have long talks about his family that showed the love he had for his family. I met George through Robert Hilliard, the sports and opera critic for the Union Leader, another wonderful friend of George who has also passed away some time ago. He is with the Lord now waiting for the gang to join him for some more wonderful pictures.

A great man who had time for everyone. I remember his words when working at the UL/NH Sunday news, an excellent sense of humor he had. He would often say "Keep your head down, and keep moving...just as I did in the trenches."

To George's Family,
How will i remember Geoge Naum? Let me count the ways: In 1954 he took my Wedding pictures and presented me with my wonderful album..I would pass him on his morning walk as i chauffeured my children and others from Bedford to West High. Tooted and, he waved back.We liked Saab cars and Volvos..Talked when we'd meet in the supermarkets. He was truly a marvelous man and good friend. My neighbor in Bedford, Helen was the fortunate

widow to find George as a companion in later years...My sincere sympathy to all of you.

TO THE GEORGE NAUM FAMILY--EVEN THOUGH GEORGE'S SHUTTER HAS BEEN CLOSED NOW FROM THIS WORLD, YOU CAN BE ASSURED THAT HE LEFT US WITH MANY "OPEN" MEMORIES WITH HIS PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND HIS KINDNESS AND CONCERN FOR PEOPLE OF ALL WALKS OF LIFE. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE MANY NIGHTS THAT I WOULD SIT WITH GEORGE AND GO OVER HIS PHOTOS OF THE EVENING AS HE PREPARED FOR PRESS TIME. WE WERE BLESSED TO HAVE KNOWN HIM. I CAN SEE YOU KNOW "POPPING" THE LIGHT BULB OUT OF YOUR CAMERA.... RAYMOND P. VALLIERE SR.

Dear Pam Kevin and Family: My thoughts of George incorporate a wide scope of happy times, and sad times, mostly melded into the pressure-packed world of news gathering --- a world in which your Dad excelled. You never had to worry when there was "Breaking News" --- "Photo by George Naum" --- because the most reliable asset every Editor at the Union Leader wanted was his signature stamp on every product he was so proud to produce for our newspapers over four decades. I was proud to work side-by-side with George over the years. Our condolences to the hundreds of thousands who over all the years "smiled" and agreed to "just one more" please. Pam & family, I am so sorry for the loss of your father. I first met George when he was covering sports in the 70's. He was always kind and friendly to a couple of kids who would hang around Gill Stadium. I got to know him a little more when he would visit Squog Fruit & Judy's Bakery in the old Granite Square. Great guy, amazing photographer.

Words can't express the loss of George. He was a prince of a man, a consummate professional with a camera and truly a friend & mentor to those of us fortunate enough to have worked with him. I remember my time spent at The Union Leader more fondly because of George. I know we are all better people having had George in our lives. My condolences for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Pamela, Patricia, Kevin and the Naum Family.
I am sorrowed for your loss. George was a truly gentle man who cared for others in a way that was inspiring. My father and George were colleagues, and friends, at the Union Leader. In fact, some of my earliest memories were of George, his camera and his Saab (with the reverse open doors!). Later, I had the pleasure of working side by side with George as we covered news events.

I will miss him, as you, but will reflect fondly and warmly on memories, and his gentle voice.

With deepest condolences,

Clark Dumont
