NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lois Jean Gainer was born in Urbana, Ohio, on August 6, 1927, to Erma (Hoose) and Henry Gainer. She grew up there on the family farm with her three older siblings: Annetta Knull of Urbana; Martin Gainer, deceased; and Dr. Joseph Gainer of Potomac, MD. Lois was valedictorian of her high school graduating class in 1944 and then attended Ohio State University where she studied music. Her organ professor was Wilbur Held, who remained her friend and mentor all her life.
Lois is survived by her husband Peter, who lives in Nashville, and daughter Catharine, and grandsons Charles and Joseph, who live in St Paul, MN.
Her family has established a Lois Gainer Fyfe Scholarship in music at her alma mater, Ohio State University, in her honor. There will be visitation and a funeral service at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Nashville on July 14; the visitation will be at 10 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m.
