CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Todd R. Murphy, 70, of Charlotte, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, May 30, 2014.
Todd was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, on Jan. 14, 1944, the son of Ray Collins Murphy and E. Ruth Fry. Following school, he answered his country's call to service in the United States Army. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served as a helicopter crewman for "The Little Bears," which was the "A" Company, 25th Aviation Battalion of the "Tropic Lightning" 25th Infantry Division. On Dec. 19, 1968, he was honorably discharged with the rank of E4 having attained the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Medal, and Army Commendation Medal. He returned to civilian life and before retirement, he worked as a lineman for Dayton Power and Light. Todd was involved in Little League Baseball and coached local teams. He also greatly enjoyed watching the Little League World Series each year. In 2010, he and his family moved to Charlotte, N.C. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and he will be missed by all who knew him.
Todd is survived by his wife, Karen Grady Murphy of Charlotte; his children: Bill (wife Jennifer) Murphy of West Liberty, Ohio, and their children Levi (wife Kelsi) and Sarah; April (husband Jeff) Snider of Cable, Ohio, and their children Adam and Lydia and great-granddaughter Arriana; T.R. Murphy of West Liberty, Ohio, and his children Macy, Maleah, Jana and great grandsons Karter and Mathew; Tara (husband Kirk) Larson of West Liberty, Ohio, and their children Rachel, Ethan, and Caleb; and Ryan Murphy of Charlotte; a step-son, Jason (wife Heidi) Szempruch of Charlotte, and their children Carolyn, Elizabeth, Paige; and his mother, Ruth Murphy of West Liberty, Ohio. Todd is further survived by his uncle, R.L. (wife Ruthie) Murphy of West Liberty, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Todd was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Ray and Richard.
A memorial service honoring Todd's life will be held at United Church of Christ, 212 Newell St., West Liberty, Ohio, 43357. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 27, 2014, with the family receiving friends at the church one hour prior to services. Interment to follow at Bellefontaine Cemetery.
