SPRINGFIELD – John E. Mosley, a 1943 graduate of Urbana High School, died March 31, 2014. Born June 14, 1923, he was preceded in death by his parents, John F. and Cleo Mosley, and a brother, Farnham E. Mosley, also Jean E. Gordon.

John Moe, as he was known to many, graduated seventh in his class of about eighty-five. He attended Moore's Business College in Urbana, Ohio, and worked at Urbana Junior College to pay his tuition.

In 1942 he began working at Wright Patterson A.F. Base, Ohio. In 1946 he entered The Ohio State University, majoring in accounting.

His scholastic achievements qualified him for Beta Gamma Sigma, the National Commerce Honorary Society, and for the Beta Alpha Psi, the national accounting fraternity for students with outstanding academic records. It is our understanding that John was the first black member of the accounting fraternity. In September 1948 he graduated after two years and nine months of classes, receiving a Bachelor of Science in business administration. The degree was granted "Cum Laude," one of seventeen "Cum Laude" degrees among the 279 degrees in business administration conferred at that convocation.

In 1954 he was hired as Cost Accountant/Systems Designer at WPAFB and was the first black professional in the office. In 1965 he took a job with the Caterpillar Tractor Company as a Computer System Analyst. Two years later he was promoted to Systems Development Supervisor. In 1970 he moved to Geneva, Switzerland, as Data Processing Manager for Caterpillar Overseas. He was again the first and only black person in the organization. He returned to Peoria, Illinois, in 1971 and retired from a position with Caterpillar TractorCompany of Peoria, Illinois, in 1986.

He was a member of Golden Square Lodge #23, Prince Hall Free, a board member of the YMCA and Accepted Masons, Urbana. He was also a life-long supporter of Jerusalem 2nd Baptist Church of this city.

He is survived by two special relatives, a "niece," Kimberly Gordon Brooks, and "nephew" Dr. Richard E. Gordon Jr., along with a number of cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday April 10th, 2014, at Jerusalem 2nd Baptist Church, 1036 S. High Street, Urbana, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, April 11th, 2014, at Jerusalem 2nd Baptist Church, Urbana, Ohio, with Reverend Carl Vactor officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, Urbana, Ohio. Arrangements are entrusted to PORTER-QUALLS-DUNLAP FUNERAL HOME.
