Arthur Serth Obituary

Arthur J.
Serth
NEW HARTFORD
Arthur J. Serth, of New Hartford, NY, died peacefully at home, Saturday, March 29, 2014, with his loving wife, Ann, and children by his side. Arthur was born in Utica, NY, on January 13, 1926, the son of Arthur J. and Julia Lurz Serth. Arthur graduated from Utica Free Academy and joined the Navy in 1945. After attending Mohawk College, he joined his father in the flooring business, A.J. Serth Floors, as a talented and hardworking carpenter. In 1959, he took over the family business which he proceeded to run for the next forty years until his semi retirement; since that time, his son, David Serth, has continued the business as the third generation Serth carpenter. Arthur married his devoted wife of 63 years, Ann Bishop, on April 7, 1951, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Frankfort, NY. Arthur and Ann raised their five children in the home which he built on Mallory Road in New Hartford, NY. He will be remembered as a devoted, patient, kind and gentle father with a love for story telling and building rope swings. He led countless family weekend ski trips to Snow Ridge as well as hiking and camping adventures that will provide a lifetime of precious memories for his children. Besides his beloved wife, Ann, Arthur is survived by his five children, Kathy Scatko (Gene) of New Hartford, NY, Bob Serth (Joanna) of Purcellville, VA, Trisha Allen (Jeff) of Portland, ME, David Serth (Linda) of New Hartford, NY, and Judy Guzzo (Peter) of Niskayuna, NY; 14 grandchildren, Christine and Steve Willis, Michael and fiancee, Kristi, Mark, Jenna, Krista, David, Carleton, Ben, Robby, Anna, Olivia, Henry, Charlie and Millie; and one great-grandson, Owen. Arthur is also survived by his six nephews, Dutch, Bob, Peter, David, Dwight and Scott Evans. He was predeceased by his sister, Joan Evans. An avid outdoorsman, Arthur had a deep love and knowledge of fishing, hunting, hiking and mountain climbing. He shared his outdoor passion with friends at the Tramp and Trail (T&T) Club. He was an outstanding member for many years, filling a multitude of leadership positions in the Utica Chapter. Arthur was the go-to person to consult on planning outdoor activities for the T&T Club, Boy Scouts and friends alike. His wife, children, grandchildren and friends were blessed with the opportunity to share his love of nature and the outdoors, accompanying him on many epic adventures, particularly in the Adirondacks. Over their 63 years, Arthur and Ann served as a tremendous inspiration to everyone as they shared countless experiences hiking, canoeing, kayaking and biking in North America and Europe. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Robert Burke and the Hospice staff. Calling hours will be Saturday from 3-6 PM at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford. A brief prayer service will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., or the charity of your choice. Online messages of sympathy may be left at: www.dfwefh.com
