Obituaries from Two Days Ago

Shepherd, Harold W. "Shep" - Westmoreland
Harold "Shep" W. Shepherd 1936 - 2016 WESTMORELAND, NY - Harold "Shep" W. Shepherd entered into rest on July 25, 2016, with his loving family by his side. Harold was formerly from Westernville, NY, but most recently resided with his daughter and son-in-law in Westmoreland, NY. He was born in Kemblesville, PA, a son of the late Cox and Edith Baker Shepherd, on October 22, 1936. As a very young man, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force. His twenty plus years brought him to nearly all of the United States as well as Greenland, Africa and most of Europe, including six years in Holland. It also introduced him to another Airman whom he met in California. Airman Mary Jo Dodd then became his wife on July 29, 1957, in Elkton Maryland. After he completed his career with the Air Force, he a started a second career with the Federal Aviation Administration, protecting the eastern shores of the US by monitoring and maintaining the radar sites in the northeast for another twenty years. He loved his country and was a true patriot. He was honored to be a founding member and a life member of the Westernville American Legion Post #1846… where everyone knew his name! Shep was a gentle soul and made friends everywhere that he went. He will be profoundly missed by them and especially by his family. He is survived by his wife of nearly fifty nine years, Mary Jo; his son, Thomas Shepherd and Vera Morrison, of Rome; and two daughters, Becky Shepherd and Wayne Williams, of Westmoreland, and Vicki and Bob Squire, of Ilion. He adored his many grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer Shepherd, of Sauquoit, Tracy and Mike Dilapi, of Vernon, Kristin and Vince Armella, of Rochester, Michael Squire, of Ilion, Patrick Squire, of Ilion, and Thomas Shepherd, II, of Rome. He was blessed with and loved whole heartedly his beautiful great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Kirstin Shepherd and Michael Dilapi, Jr. He had hoped to live long enough to welcome his fourth great-grandchild in a few months. It wasn't to be and now they all have a special angel looking over them. Survivors also include sister-in-law, Mildred Shepherd, of PA; two sisters, Janet and John Wheatley, of PA, and Grace and John Brickner, of CA; a brother-in-law, Sam Dodd, of OH; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Michael Shepherd, in 1985; his loving brother, Ronald Shepherd; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bobby Lou and Bill Colvin. In lieu of gifts or flowers and in respect to Shep's caring and giving personality, the family wishes that you may perform a random act of kindness and think of Shep as you do. Special thanks for the care and professionalism shown to Harold by Dr. Cherney and staff, Dr. Poonati and staff, Rome Memorial Hospital, Bethany Gardens and Hospice and Palliative Care. Funeral services with military honors will be held Saturday at 11 AM at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street. Burial will be in Westernville Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 7 PM. Please offer online tributes or light a candle at www.BarryFuneralHome.com .

Simbari, Nancy (Palmisano) - Utica
Nancy (Palmisano) Simbari 1928 - 2016 UTICA - Mrs. Nancy (Palmisano) Simbari, age 87, passed away as the Lord gently lifted her soul on Thursday evening, July 21, 2016. At that last moment, she was in the hearts of those she loved most. Born in Utica on October 23, 1928, Nancy was the daughter of the late Santo and Rosa (Filomeno) Palmisano. Raised and educated locally, she was a graduate of T.R. Proctor and went on to receive a degree from the Utica School of Commerce. On November 26, 1953 she married Samuel "Sam" P. Simbari; they were a couple who embraced life, supported each other's happiest moments, and held on to one another for strength during trying times. Their lives were united through love during their 62 years of marriage. At one time, Nancy held employment at IBM, taking time off to raise her family. She later worked at Holy Trinity School and then became head of the Nutrition Program for Oneida County. At the time of her death, she was a commissioner on the Board of the Utica Municipal Housing Authority. Nancy was blessed with a benevolent heart, a strong spirit, and a kind soul. She was a true friend and when you were in her company, you had a sense of belonging and goodness. As a mom, she wholeheartedly celebrated her children's victories, cried over any disappointment, and always gave more than her very best to their wellbeing. She kept a meticulous home, and coupled with Sam keeping a pristine exterior, together they provided a welcoming comfortable home. Nancy was generous with her time and talents in so many ways. She loved her Catholic faith and for many years was a devout member of St. Agnes Church and its congregational life. She was very religious and held a great adoration for this church, attending daily Mass and proudly serving as a Eucharistic Minister. Her hard work, humble heart, and gift of time went into so many parish activities. More recently, she was a parishioner of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Nancy is survived by her husband, Sam; her daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca J. and Jeffrey Almstead of Newtonville NY; her son, David J. Simbari and Lynn Bradley of Naples FL; and her grandchildren, Stephanie Simbari, and Stephen Simbari, both of CA, and their mother, Jill Copeland Simbari of Westchester NY. Her extended family includes her nieces and nephews, especially acknowledging Rosemary and Duffy Dougherty of Utica, and Ann and Tom Wolanski of Fairport NY; her great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, in-laws, John and Carolyn "Kitty" Simbari, and Carmen and Carolyn Simbari, all of AZ, Angie and Robert Cekosh of FL, Josephine Smart of GA, and Shirley Simbari of Syracuse; and her special friend, Marie Luce. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Mamie and John Perretta; her brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Rita Palmisano, and Frank and Rose Palmisano; and her in-laws, Frank and Evelyn Simbari, Anthony and Gretchen Simbari, Bernard Simbari, Guy Simbari, Lucy and Vincent Dannes, Mary and Roger Girouard, Pat and William Stone, and Eleanor Wells. The family wishes to extend thoughtful thanks to the St. Elizabeth Medical Center nurses and staff of 3A for their care and concern; and the caregivers of the Abraham House for their loving comfort and vigilance. The family will gather privately to honor Nancy's life. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Monday morning at 11:00 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. James Cesta. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the Mass.
