James "Jim" M. Obernesser, 59, Coast Guard Commander (Retired), passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a 1972 graduate of New Hartford High School and resided in Yorktown, Virginia. Jim was the son of the late Dr. Charles and Frances Obernesser of New Hartford, New York. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 22 years, received his Masters of Environmental Science Degree from the University of Michigan, and later served the Coast Guard for 10 years as a civil servant. Jim's knowledge of environmental issues was extensive with a strong disposition in oil spill technology. Jim was well-respected and known best for always being there to help his family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. He was a lifelong NY Giants fan. He leaves behind his wife and best friend, Jane, and their son, Scott. He is also survived by his twin brother, Charles Obernesser and his wife, Mary, of New Hartford; brother, Dr. Mark Obernesser and wife, Carole, of Akron, OH; sister, Karen Bannigan and husband, John, of Clinton; his mother-in-law, Marion Graff, of Port Charlotte, FL; and several in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his sister, Christine. Funeral service and interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined.
