Mrs. Margaret Ellis Powell, age 67, of Fernandina Beach, FL, passed away on Monday morning, February 17, 2014. Born in Liverpool, England, she was the second of five children born to the late David Howell Ellis and Alice Davies Ellis. At the age of 2, her family came to the United States and settled in Utica, NY. She was educated in the Utica Public School System. She later earned her Bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Oswego and a Master's degree in Education from the State University of New York at Cortland. In 1970, she married William Thomas Powell in Utica's Grace Episcopal Church. The newlyweds made their first home in Utica before moving to Vernon, NY. In 1976, their first daughter, Megan Hamilton Powell, was born. In 1979, their second daughter, Bryn Dickson Powell, was born. Mrs. Powell taught elementary school in the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School District. After retiring in 2003, she and her husband traveled throughout the United States, Europe, and the islands of the Caribbean. In 2010, she and her husband moved to Fernandina Beach, FL. Mrs. Powell delighted in spending time with her family, including walking the beach with her husband and Lord Nelson, their fox terrier. She was an avid reader who also enjoyed sailing and collecting shells and shark's teeth from the shores of Fernandina Beach. Mrs. Powell leaves behind her husband of 44 years, William T. Powell, Fernandina Beach, FL; their two daughters, Megan H.P. Miller (Larry), Newtown Square, PA, and Bryn D. Powell, Vernon, NY; two brothers, Chris Ellis (Laurie), Marcy, NY, and Mike Ellis (Ann), Raleigh, NC; one sister, Debbie Wingfield (John), Middleburg, NY; two grandchildren, Kaia and Toby Miller; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, David Ellis. A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard with Reverend Jackie Hayes officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Doctors without Borders, 333 7th Avenue, New York, NY 10001-5004.
