Dr. Mildred E. Behrens, 90, formerly of New Hartford, NY, died Thursday, January 10, 2013. She was born April 26, 1922, in Geneva, NY, daughter of the late Frederick and Katherine Haag Behrens. She was predeceased by her sister, Elsie A. Behrens Schiller; nephew, Richard I. Bornheimer, KIA Vietnam; and aunts and uncles, including Gottlob Haag. Mildred is survived by her sisters, Helen Bornheimer, Raleigh, NC, and Dorothy VanDyke, Penn Yan, NY. Surviving also are nephews and nieces, Gordon (Joanne) Schiller, Patricia Schiller, David (Beverly) Bornheimer, Philip (Cheryl) Bornheimer, Mark (Pat) Bornheimer, William (Amy) VanDyke, Steven (Lorraine) VanDyke and Carol (Al) Baldy, and also many grandnephews and nieces, including Bethany and Jill Schiller. Millie's formal education began in a one-room school house with Mrs. Flossie Derr. She graduated from Geneva High School, 1940, and Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing, 1944. Millie served in the US Army Nurse Corps (WW II) in the South Pacific. She continued her education via the GI Bill, earning her B.S. degree in Nursing Education, University of Rochester, 1950, and P.H.D. in Zoology, Syracuse University, 1963. Millie was employed as a research scientist at Masonic Medical Research Lab, Utica, NY. She was a visiting scientist at the Institute for Neurobiology, Julich, Germany. Her interests included family, traveling, gardening, politics, and the arts. She was an avid member of the Adirondack Mountain Club and Tramp and Trail Club, where she made many lasting friends and encouraged all she met to join. In retirement, Millie volunteered as a reading tutor at Watson Williams Elementary School, Utica, and the Soup Kitchen, Grace Church, Utica. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Seneca Nursing & Rehab Center staff for their compassionate care during Millie's stay. Millie has donated her body to Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, NY. Donations in her name may be made to Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5022, Hagerstown, MD 21741-9804.
