I am very sorry for your loss.
I had the privilege of serving under Merle as one of his firefighters from 1983-1985 while I lived in Vernon. He always cared for his people and department and community, a very nice man and a good Chief.

Mr Nell was my family's postman. It's an honor to know he was a part of many meaningful mail exchanges for the Lather family. As a lil girl, I remember him being kind and hard-working. One person, of many, who made Vernon a special and safe place to grow up. My sincere condiolences to the Nell family and friends. Prayers for comfort and strength in the days and years ahead. Peace, Cindy Lather Wheeler Valatie, NY

My condolences to the entire family. Growing up on Van Epps street on Vernon I had seen Capt. Nell around town and at the fire station. Always friendly, always smiling. Rest easy, surely there are no fires in heaven but if there are; then God has one of the best there ever was.

I have known Merle for nearly 20 years and am still in shock at the sudden news. He was a great man. A great role model for many, and an ideological representation to " old school "; which in my opinion the rest of the world and today's generations could learn from. He will be missed. So sorry for your families' loss. Words cannot explain. Sincerely,Darrack L. Bush,D.C
