James A. Kanavaros, 92, of Kemp Rd., passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at the Presbyterian Home for CNY in New Hartford. He was born December 1, 1921, in Cleveland, OH, a son of James and Eunice Rittenauer Kanavaros. He was raised and educated in New York City and Chicago. He was a graduate of Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, in preparatory aircrew training. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943, serving with the 34th Infantry Division in World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1946. James married Mildred Eckstein who predeceased him on January 2, 1959. On May 7, 1960, he married Elizabeth Betty J. Anslow in Long Island. James became a member of the New York City Police Department on October 23, 1961, serving for 21 years and retiring as a Sergeant on November 12, 1982. He moved to Waterville in 1984 and was a communicant of St. Bernards Church. He was a car enthusiast and enjoyed gun collecting. Surviving are his wife, Betty; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Timothy Jones, of Waterville; son and daughter-in-law, James and Theresa Kanavaros, of Clarks Summit, PA; grandchildren, Kevin and Brendan Jones, and Thomas and Jaime Kanavaros. He was predeceased by a son, Kevin P. Kanavaros, in 1983. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2014, at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home (Kloster & Northrop Memorial Chapel), 210 E. Main St., Waterville, followed at 11:00 a.m. by the celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Bernard's Church, 199 Stafford Ave., Waterville. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 5-8 p.m. Interment with military honors will be in the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY, at 2 p.m., Monday, August 11, 2014.
