Brett D. Swank Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
When he was last home, Brett D. Swank summoned up the courage to speak to third graders at the elementary School where his stepmother teaches. "He said the 85 third graders made him more nervous than being in Iraq. He did a wonderful job with the kids," said his stepmother, Rebecca Swank. Swank, 21, of Northumberland, Pa., was killed Jan. 24 by a homemade bomb in western Baghdad. He was based at Fort Polk. Swank was accepted to Colorado State University, but deferred because he wanted to complete his Army service. He began basic training months after graduating _ on Sept. 11, 2001. In high school, he was co-captain of the soccer team, a ski club member and competed in track and field. Swank's grandfather served during World War II, but Swank's father, Daniel, said his son was influenced by Army Rangers who came to talk to classmates. "We sat down one night at dinner and I said I don't think you want to do it," Daniel said. "He said I want to do it _ I'll get my money for college. It was pretty cool a 17-year-old had a plan." He also is survived by his mother, Debbie Santucci.

I am Kyle Seamans mother. Brett was the best man at Kyle's wedding. We met Brett the night of Kyle's rehearsal dinner. He was a fine young man. Kyle still misses him a lot. I wear a bracelet of Kyle's that has Brett's name and the date that he passed away. Will probably never take it off. I wear it to honor his life. Brett was and is a true American hero. God bless your family and God bless Brett.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

My husband is an avid motorcycle rider and just particpated in the annual Illinois Iragi Freedom Run which supports our troops. This event is one of the largest gatherings of motorcycles in Illinois. Some 60,000 bikers participated. My husband related that this was possibly bigger that the annual Toys for Tots run. We are not your typical biker people more like the average working joe who likes to ride type. Each participant was given a dog tag with an individual who died's name on each tag. Sgt. Brett Swank's tag was given to my husband. He is not forgotten. We support out troops.

To All Concerned,
I had the distinct honor and privelige of serving with Brett while he was in the 509th. He always smiled and put his heart and soul into everything he did. He taught me a great deal about character and loyalty. He was a great soldier and an even greater human being. He will never be forgotten.

Brett. I used to listen to songs of the war and the bravery of the soldiers who served in them. Now, as a retired MSgt, I'm not sure I'd want to hear them again. I remember sitting off the coast of Somalia, with the Navy, and watching Rangers and Marines fight side-by-side, well through the night. I could only imagine what was going on there...and what you must have seen and felt, too. I'm sorry you died...but I know you have gone on to a much better place! God's speed, my good and faithful servant! Yours,

Please know that I am deeply sorry for the recent loss of Sgt. Brett Swank.

As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly,

and as a sister, who has lost a brother to war,

I am aware of the deep and devastating pain that you are experiencing.

The overwhelming heartache, seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes.

Please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.

Ever so softly and slowly, time does heal.

May Brett Rest Safely, in the Mighty Arms of God and know that he WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

I pray that God's Loving Comfort and Grace will be with you and your family.

I am the sister, of such a Young Hero, who also attended Ranger Training at Ft Benning, Ga. and made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.

Surely He hath borne our grief, and carried our sorrow.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

To the Swank family, friends...

He joined the Army for the love of the USA. He died as a soldier, for the freedom and love of the USA. A candle was lite in his rememberance in the JROTC room, to honor him, to remember him, and all the memories that he gave to our friends, his family, and all those who knew Brett. Thus it is sad to see him go so soon in his life, he did what he believed in.

When I read or hear of a young soldier such as Sgt. Brett Swank giving his all for our country, it forms a lump in my throat so big I can hardly swallow. Tears to my eyes that I can hardly see but all along I stand at attention along with many others who have served and salute Sgt. Swank and his family for their unselfish act of love for their country and mankind in general. I have a son who proudly served in the Army and spent time in the middle east as well. I prayed to GOD that he would bring my son home safely and my prayers were answered. It appears that GOD had a special mission for Sgt. Swank to accomplish. I'm sure that this mission has been carried out with honor. Carry on Sgt. Swank, carry on.
