Obituary Condolences

Dorothy Fowlkes
Merithew
WHITESBORO
Dorothy Fowlkes Merithew, age 79, formerly of Whitesboro, left her family and loved ones on earth on August 30, 2014, and is now at peace. Dorothy, also known as Dottie, Dot, Ma, and Nana, among other terms of endearment, was born March 9, 1935, in Syracuse, New York, to Walter and Carol Gerhardt Gaughan. She was proudly the youngest of three sisters, "The Gaughan Girls". Dottie was a devoted mother who passed on her love of sports to her four children. She was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and Syracuse Orange. Nana was at every game possible to support her children and grandchildren, often the proudest, loudest and most nervous fan. Dot had a great sense of humor and a sharp wit that made every gathering enjoyable and eventful. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Elmer, of New Hartford; a sister, Ann Hartshorne, of Florida; a brother-in-law, Sonny and his wife; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bob Merritt; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Paul Carson; son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Nancy Fowlkes; and daughter and son-in-law, Donna and David Moulton. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jason Durando, Brett and Ryan Merritt, Kelly Fowlkes Sudol, Krista Fowlkes Tompkins and Megan Fowlkes Antonio; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Olivia and Emma Durando, Emma and Addyson Merritt, Aubrey and Brynn Sudol, Kendall, Lily and Teagen Tompkins, and Jordan Antonio; as well as many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents; sister, Jane Van Valkenburg; brother-in-law, Al Van Valkenburg; in-laws, Hank and Gladys Merithew; sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Bill Williams; and sister-in-law, Sharon Merithew. Dorothy will be missed for her ability to enjoy life no matter what the circumstances, her ability to make others laugh, and her unending love for her family. The family would like to thank those that cared for Dorothy throughout her illness, especially the staff of the Maple Wing of the Presbyterian Home. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 2nd, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, Forty Main Street, Whitesboro. Funeral services will be Tuesday, 7:00 p.m., at the conclusion of calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Donations to honor her memory can be made to the Presbyterian Home, 4920 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
