Edward L. DeSanctis, age 85, of Utica and formerly of Guilderland, died May 21, 2013, at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. He was born April 3, 1928, in Utica, a son of Ernest L. and Ruth Palmer DeSanctis. He graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1946 and the Utica College of Syracuse University in 1951 with a B.A. and his MBA from Syracuse University in 1952. He served as a Sergeant in the US Army from 1952 - 1954. Edward married Rose M. Fusco in 1953 in Utica. He worked in banking for 44 years, beginning at Oneida National Bank. He established Mohawk Valley State Bank with other area businessmen. He later worked at Banker's Trust and retired from the 1st American Bank. He was a member of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Utica Council #189, the Knights of Columbus, Utica and Albany Rotary Clubs and sang with the Mendelssohn Club of Albany. He was an officer of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Utica Chapter, a Past President of the Utica Art Club and a volunteer with the Cerebral Palsy Center of Albany. He was an adjunct Professor at both Utica College and MVCC. He was a former member of the Utica Curling Club, Finance Director for the Guilderland Library, a volunteer at Albany Medical Center, President of Interfaith Council, Albany, and a volunteer at the Oneida County Historical Society. Ed enjoyed painting, gardening, woodworking, reading and was a Civil War buff. In his younger years, he was an avid skier and enjoyed golf. Edward is survived by his wife, Rose, and his children, Christine M. DeSanctis, Utica, Michael E. DeSanctis, Erie, PA, Robert J. (Deborah) DeSanctis, Utica, and Edward E. (Maryann) DeSanctis, NH. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Katelynd, Andrew, Elizabeth, Clare, Matthew, Rachel, Gabrielle, Ruth and Emma DeSanctis and John, Christopher and Sarah Rose Murphy; sister, Eleanor Barth, Venice, FL; sisters-in-law, Mary Mancuso, Kay Fondario and Jean Baldwin; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the doctors and staff of the ICU at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. The funeral will be Thursday at 12:00 Noon at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. at the church prior to the Mass. In Memory of Ed, friends may consider the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes or Oneida County Historical Society.
