1926 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Elaine M.
Brodzik
SEATTLE, WA
Elaine Eleanor Maszczak Brodzik, 88, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 27, 2014, in Seattle, WA. She was born in New York Mills, NY, on August 13, 1926, to Adam Maszczak and Caroline (nee Mikulski) Maszczak. She graduated from New York Mills High School in 1943, received her RN degree from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in 1947, and enjoyed a fulfilling nursing career at St. Luke's Hospital, Utica, NY, Millard Fillmore Hospital, Buffalo, NY, and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, NY. On January 8, 1952, she married Francis J. Brodzik of Utica, NY, and together they raised six daughters. Elaine was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed cooking for her large family. She always made sure that family holidays preserved Polish traditions and included plenty of good food. She studied Polish language and literature at the University of Buffalo. Her family was always important in her life; Elaine loved participating in all family events. She was proud of her daughters and their personal and professional accomplishments. As a young woman, Elaine enjoyed Sunday excursions with her parents and sisters in the family car, and she especially enjoyed time with her father on fishing expeditions. She loved gardening, reading biographies, listening to music, knitting and other needlecrafts, drawing and painting. Her cartoon sketches and wishes for a great day regularly decorated the lunchbags her daughters carried to school. Elaine lived in Seattle since 2005, making many new friends there and deeply enjoying visits with her daughters. She was an avid Seattle Mariners and Seahawks fan, and took pleasure in attending Seattle Symphony concerts, National Geographic lectures, and spending quiet afternoons at West Seattle's Alki Beach. She was fond of animals, especially dogs. Most recently a parishioner of St. James Cathedral in Seattle, she had a special devotion to the Virgin Mary. Everyone who knew her was warmed by the sparkle in her eye. Elaine was predeceased by her husband and her sisters Dorothy Maszczak, Constance Ostrander and Caroline Stankivitz. Surviving are her daughters Christine Brodzik (James Troise) of Barkhamsted, CT, Monica Brodzik (Salvador Talisa) of Ellicott City, MD, Teresa Brodzik of Hillsboro, OR, Stella 'Stacy' Brodzik (Julie V.) of West Seattle, WA, Martha 'Marty' Brodzik (Roger Moseley) of Palmer Lake, CO and Mary Jo Brodzik (Hans Rohner) of Nederland, CO; her grandsons Victor Talisa of Pittsburgh, PA and Noah Talisa of Columbus, OH; her niece and godchild Joan Carbone of North Bay, NY; her nephews Richard Stankivitz of Canastota, NY, Frederick Ostrander of Oriskany, NY, Thomas Ostrander of New York Mills, NY and Robert Ostrander of Whitesboro, NY; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Friends are invited to call at the Kowalczyk Funeral Home, 1156 Lincoln Ave., Utica, Wednesday, September 3, 4-7 p.m., and Thursday, September 4, 9-10 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Church, 1206 Lincoln Ave., Utica, on Thursday, September 4, at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment at Holy Trinity Cemetery.
