Jacob Broedel Obituary

Jacob "Jake" Broedel
North Brookfield
Jacob "Jake" Broedel, 79, of North Brookfield, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 13, 2013, at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Utica, following a courageous 2-week battle with pneumonia and ensuing complications. Jake was born February 22, 1933, in Clinton, NY, a son of Francis and Mary Brady Broedel. He grew up and was educated in Utica. In 1952, Jake married Dana Cross, a loving union of over 60 years. Jake was a natural athlete. He spent many years playing baseball for local town teams, always at first base. Jake also coached Bush League for North Brookfield for approximately 30 years. Many local ballplayers will fondly recall the end of season trips to Yankee Stadium or the Catskill Game Farm. He was an avid bowler and, in his later years, he was a horseshoe champ, winning the NYS Champion Horseshoe Title for his division. In 1997, he competed and placed 7th in the World Horseshoe Championship held in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Some of Jake's happiest times were spent camping at Kayuta Lake with his family and friends. Jake worked as a truck driver for many years at Bennett-Ireland and later as a contract hauler for his company, No-Bro Enterprises. His final working years were spent as a security guard, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. Jake was a charter member of WAVAC and a member of the North Brookfield Fire Department for almost 40 years. Jake and Dana were blessed with six sons and a daughter. Surviving, besides his wife, are his children, Daryl (Rosemary), Dan (Chris), Bruce, Terry (Jim) McFadden, Mark and his companion, Cindy Albertina, Dick (Brenda) and Greg (Robin); his fifteen grandchildren who enjoyed many a game of pitch or cribbage with "Pops"; and his thirteen great-grandchildren who added so much joy to his later years. Also surviving are his brothers, Francis (Cathy) of CA and Jim of Hamilton, NY, and a sister-in-law, Joan Broedel of New Hartford, NY; his in-laws, Barb & Jim Gallagher, Jean Vaughan, Janet Vaca and Bob Cross; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jake was predeceased by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Bob and Megan, and Bill, and a daughter-in-law, Debra Hines Broedel. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 19, 2013, at St. Bernard's Church, 199 Stafford Ave., Waterville, NY. Following the service, there will be a gathering of family and friends at the North Brookfield Fire House to reminisce and share in the warmth of friendship. Interment will be in the North Brookfield Cemetery at the convenience of his family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to WAVAC or to the North Brookfield Fire Department. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville, NY. Jake inspired and lead lots of fun for North Brookfield kids when we were 'Bush Leaguers' in the 1960s. A kind and gentle coach who instilled the value of team playing in many of us, you'll always be remembered. Since back then, girls didn't 'play', Jake taught me to keep score. I'm sure Jake was responsible for my love of baseball. I married a catcher, became a Mets fan, and think back to those wonderful days fondly and often. Thank you, Jake!
