Obituary Condolences

Sister Renee Marie
(Sharon) Cudhea
Sister Renee Marie (Sharon) Cudhea, RSM, died Wednesday, April 9, 2014, in the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital. She had been a Sister of Mercy for 54 years. Born in Tupper Lake and raised in Ilion, New York, she was the daughter of the late William and Anne Lester Cudhea. Sister Renee earned a bachelor's degree from the College of St. Rose, Albany, and a master's degree from State University at Albany. She did graduate study at Syracuse and Colgate Universities. Sister Renee ministered as a teacher at St. Patrick's, Johnstown; Our Lady of Mercy, Colonie; St. Mary's, Oneonta; St. Mary's, Waterford; Catholic Central High School, Troy; and Maria College, Albany, where she also served for a time as Admissions Director. A much admired teacher, Sister Renee particularly enjoyed the years she spent teaching English at Catholic Central High School. The school yearbook and literary magazine took shape under her competent guidance. She held both herself and her students accountable to attention to the tiniest detail. Her appreciation of nature and her fun-loving disposition made it easy for her to persuade others to participate in the outdoor activities she planned. Sister Renee was gifted with a gentleness of spirit, remaining calm even when those around her gave in to stress and anxiety. In her ministry in student placement at Maria College, she exhibited a genuine care for those she was guiding. She had a way of encouraging, indeed of urging students to go beyond what they perceived to be their limits, often resulting in their making life-changing decisions. In addition to her parents, Sister Renee was predeceased by her brother, Michael. She is survived by her sister, Brenda; her brother, Anthony (Shirley); her nephew, Gordy; grandnieces and grandnephews; as well as by her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy. Viewing hours will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, April 11, in the Chapel of the Convent of Mercy, 634 New Scotland Avenue, Albany. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Prayer Service of Remembrance in the Chapel at 7:00 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, April 12, in the Chapel. Interment will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush. The Sisters of Mercy are grateful to the staff of St. Peter's Hospital and the Hospice Inn for the tenderness with which they cared for our Sister. Contributions may be made in Sister Renee's memory to the Sisters of Mercy, 310 South Manning Boulevard, Albany, New York 12208. Condolence page at www.wjlyonsfuneralhome.com
