Robert G. Cheesman, 72, of County Route 2, Redwood, NY, died Saturday, February 9, 2013, in the Emergency Room at River Hospital as a result of injuries suffered in a fire at his home. Robert was born on April 14, 1940, in Lackawanna, NY, the son of Glenn and Suzanna Furner Cheesman. He graduated from Fr. Baker High School in Lackawanna, NY, in 1958 and later from Morrisville Ag & Tech, Morrisville, NY, in 1960. He married Demerise "Debbie" Perreault on December 31, 1960, at St. Mary's Church in New York Mills, NY. Robert formerly worked for Libby's Foods in Rochester, MN, Herron Cable in Utica, NY, was the owner/operator of the Brookside Tavern in Ilion, NY, was the caretaker for Casa Blanca on Cherry Island in Alexandria Bay, NY, and most recently owned and operated Cheesman's Landscaping, Redwood, NY. He was a member of Save the River and the Rainbow Ridge Ranch Hunting Club. He enjoyed playing cribbage and was an avid fisherman. Robert is survived by his wife, Debbie; their son, Glenn W. Cheesman and his fiancee, Barb Wratten, Redwood; their daughter, Mrs. David (Shelley) Gregory, Fredericksburg, VA; three granddaughters, Shannon Cheesman, West Winfield, NY, and Jillian and Ellen Gregory, Fredericksburg, VA; a brother, James (Candace) Cheesman, Perry, NY; and a sister, Mrs. Charles (Helen) Markus, Hamburg, NY. Calling hours will be held at Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay, from 2-4 on Thursday, February 14th. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m., with Fr. Doug Comstock officiating. In lieu of flowers, and in consideration that the family lost everything in the house fire, donations may be made to Watertown Savings Bank #13607, 4 Market St., Alexandria Bay, NY 13607, with checks payable to: Watertown Savings Bank FBO Demerise Cheesman.
