Mr. Ernest E. Zumpano Jr., 76, passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Faxton-St. Lukes Healthcare. Ernie was born in Utica, February 20, 1938, a son of the late Ernest Sr. and Congetta (Santagata) Zumpano. He was educated in local schools and a 1955 graduate of Utica Catholic Academy and later MVCC majoring in accounting. Ernie served in the Army Reserve in the late fifties. On October 6, 1962, Ernie was joined in marriage to the former Joan Wilkinson. They have enjoyed over fifty-one loving years together. Ernie had a lifelong career in the automobile business, and worked in all the phases, including sales in new cars, used cars, and office management. He predominantly worked at C. Weaver Chevrolet and owned and operated his own business Ernest Buick on State St. for many years. He always remained active in the auto business, but also worked part time for the past sixteen years at Vernon Downs. Ernie enjoyed spending time with family and friends and will be sadly missed by his beloved wife, Joan; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Nancy A. Zumpano, of Utica, Lynn and Dean Chatfield, of Chesapeake, VA, Chris and Rich Szeles, of New Hartford, and Natalie Zumpano, of Utica; one granddaughter, the love of his life, Cara Michelle Szeles; one sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne and Tom Gossin, Utica; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Michael and Maureen Zumpano, Albert and Patty Zumpano, and Matthew Zumpano, all of Whitesboro; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Keith Watson, Sound Beach, LI; also many nieces, nephews, and cousins with special appreciation of his niece, Dr. Marissa Kalil; also lifelong friends, David H. Brown, Thomas Moore, and Michael Scholl. He was predeceased by his sister, Marie Therese Zumpano; and his brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, Chuck and Betty Wilkinson. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Church. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Matt Funeral Home, at 700 Rutger St., at Mohawk St., Utica. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the .
