Obituary Condolences

Dr. H. George
Dr. H. George Henry, 92, of Leesburg, Florida, died Sunday, June 22, 2014 at Leesburg, Florida. He was born December 31, 1921 in Cuba. The world is a better place because Dr. H. George Henry was born. To those who had the privilege to know him, he was a gentle giant, a brilliant thinker, a loyal friend, a loving husband, and caregiver. George grew up in Jamaica where he started his academic career at Mico Teacher's College. He completed his postgraduate studies in the United States earning a doctorate in Economics and ended his professional career as an Economics Professor Emeritus at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. George was always devoted to his family and helped to provide the financial means so that all his younger siblings could also pursue their academic and professional goals. George had a great love of travel. Before going to Colgate University, he lived in Losotho, where he headed the department of economics at Pius the XII University. While in Lesotho, he courageously travelled to Apartheid, South Africa, which as a black man in the 1960's could have landed him in jail, or worse. He also travelled to most of the countries in Africa, south of the equator. At Colgate University, George shared his love of travel to his students by organizing annual cultural tours, where he and his wife Alma would chaperone groups of students to Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. To quote Alma, who predeceased George, "those were the happiest times of our life together." George is survived by his daughters, Maria (Elmo) Robinson, and Patricia Warrington; sister, Sylvia Newsome; grandchildren, Lamar and Kyle; his great-grandchildren, Camron, Damion, and Arayah; and nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held at Beyers Funeral Home Chapel,Leesburg, Florida on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 11:00 am, Deacon Byron Otradovec will preside. Inurnment will follow at Lone Oak Cemetery, Leesburg, Florida. Online condolences may be left at www.beyersfuneralhome.com.
