Donald F. Esengard, 84, formerly of Poppleton Rd., Durhamville, died Sunday, July 27, 2014, in the Oneida Healthcare Center, where he had been a patient since early July. Born in Oneida, November 5, 1929, Don was the son of Charles and Catherine Schremp Esengard. He graduated from Oneida High School and married the former Barbara Skinner in 1953. She passed away in 2012. Don began a love of horses early in life, working at the livery stable in Sylvan Beach during the summer. He would lead trail rides, give pony rides, and care for the horses. Don trained many horses over the years at the farm on Poppleton Rd. - some of his own and some for others. He was a patient and gentle horseman. Don and Barb founded Esengards - the horsemans store in 1964. It was the largest of its kind in CNY for many years. Don also learned to repair shoes and boots and operated a cobbler shop as part of the family business. Previously, he had worked as an auto mechanic for garages in Rome and Oneida. He also spent time working for the NYS Parks System, helping rebuild the Erie Canal tow path. Don is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Roy Dust, of Camden; his son and daughter-in-law, Karl and Brenda Esengard, of Verona; his brother, Louis Esengard, of Oneida; along with granddaughters, Catherine Dust (Mohawk), Rebecca Dust (Sherrill), and Ashley and Erica Esengard (Verona); great-grandchildren, Cassie, Gabe, Elena, Blake, Mason and Tori; and a great-great-grandson, Jacoby. Don also leaves his companion of the last year, Elizabeth Ann Mealus. The family expresses their gratitude to the entire staff at the Oneida Healthcare ICU and the fourth floor for their care and compassion during Dons stay there. Also, a thanks to the staff at the Oneida Medical Associates Camden office, especially Dr. McKay. Don would say, Thanks Cousin. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, 4PM, at the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main Street, Oneida, with Rev. Jeff Moore officiating.
