Catherine Zalewski Obituary

Catherine Zalewski
Utica, NY
Mrs. Catherine "Kay" E. (Zinicola) Zalewski, 86, passed away, with her loving family by her side, on Monday, July 2, 2012, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Catherine was born in Utica on March 2, 1926, the daughter of Gaetano and Pasqualina (Lepone) Zinicola. She was educated at Mt. Carmel School, and remained devoted to its church her entire life. She was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School. During WWII, Kay worked at Rome Air Base. On August 17, 1946, Kay was joined in marriage to Joseph Zalewski, and they have shared over sixty-five very close and loving years together. She also spent many years working as an aide for the Utica Schools on the special education buses. Kay was a dedicated homemaker, whose life revolved around her family and her greatest joy was to be with them. Known lovingly as "Mimi", some of her most favorite times were her Christmas Eve dinners and summer vacation trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She also spent many enjoyable days at the Turning Stone Casino and Vernon Downs. She is survived by her beloved husband, Joseph; her daughter and son-in-law, Victoria and David Myers; her three sons and two daughters-in-law, Richard Zalewski, David and Helen Zalewski, and Paul and Marybeth Zalewski; her beloved fifteen grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as Mimi, Melissa and Todd Ponticello, Stephanie and Aaron Fox, Adam and Diane Zalewski, Kathryn, Sarah, Matthew, Emily and Casey, Christopher Zalewski, Jenna Zalewski and her fiance, Michael Lane, Melissa and Rich Noti, Benjamin and Rachael, and Jack Zalewski; five great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Colin, Jacob, Sydney and Richie; and also many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Joseph and Anthony Zinicola. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, with private entombment in Calvary Mausoleum. There are no calling hours. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of mass. Arrangements are with The Matt Funeral Home of Utica. The family would like to offer heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jorgensen and the staff of St. Elizabeth Medical Center for their loving care and compassion. Online Memorials at MattFuneralHome.com
