ROME, NY - George A. Wakulik, Sr. , 88, of Rome, passed away on August 28, 2013, at Rome Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Rome, on May 31, 1925, a son of Alexander and Anna Kobito Wakulik. George was a graduate of R.F.A. class of 1943; he then enlisted in the United States Navy. During his tour of duty, George was a Gunner's Mate on the gunship LCS "L" - 84, serving in the South Pacific Theatre. On October 18, 1947, George was united in marriage to Italia Maria, "Dolly", Aiello in St. John The Baptist Church. She predeceased him on June 12th, 2004. For over 38 years, George was employed by the City of Rome Fire Dept., retiring in 1991 as a 1st Deputy Fire Chief. George was very active in his church, serving as a Sub-Deacon, Past Warden at the Zion Episcopal Church in Rome, a member of Vestry at Grace Episcopal Church of Mohawk and Past Master of the Roman Hathaway F & AM #223. He was a N.Y. State Fire Instructor, member of Oneida County Arson Task Force, Life Member of Rome Post 2246 V.F.W. and H.P. Smith Post American Legion, National Association of U.S.S. LCS (L), and the NAACP.
George is survived by his four children, George A. Wakulik, Jr., Canonsburg, PA, Mark Wakulik, Charlotte, NC, Georgeann (John) Owens, Rome, and Mary Wakulik (Gerald Marketos); his special niece, Tisia Procopio Stemp, Henderson, NV; a brother, Raymond Wakulik, Rome; one aunt, Esther Kobito; special friend, Laurel Miazga; grandchildren, George, III, Christopher, Matthew, Thomas, Bryan and T.J.; great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Abigail; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by a sister, Stefi Budzynski, and a brother, Chester Wakulik.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to National Association of U.S.S. LCS (L) 1 130 Retrieval Fund, Dennis A. Steenburgen, Secretary, 7345 W. Lakeside Drive, Littleton, CO 80125.
Funeral services will be held 10 AM, Saturday, at Zion Episcopal Church on Liberty Street, Rome. There are no calling hours. Burial will take place in Rome Cemetery.
