FOSTER MARSHALL Obituary

MARSHALL, FOSTER II December 7, 1929 to October 29, 2012 Born in South Carolina, Foster graduated from medical school in 1956 and completed his surgical residency in 1961. He opened a pediatric surgery practice in 1972 and co-founded the Columbia Children's Hospital in 1983. He became Chief of Staff of the VA Medical Center in Columbia in 1993. He joined the Army Reserves in 1959 and in 1962, was selected as a recovery team surgeon for the Project Mercury Space Program. He volunteered to go to Vietnam with USAID as a surgeon in 1966. In 1982, he attained the rank of Brigadier General and was given command of 32 hospitals. He moved to San Diego in 1996 and worked as a Compensation and Pension physician at the VA until his death. He was a brilliant surgeon and researcher; loyal soldier and patriot; and beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by wife Julie Jessop; children Helen, Foster, David, Caroline, Erik, and Kate; and grandchildren Jessica, Marshall, Claire, and Chloe. Those of us who were blessed enough to know him will remember his love of learning; his humor; his Southern manners; and his love of God, family, and country. He was the epitome of an officer and a gentleman.

Memories and Condolences
for FOSTER MARSHALL

Not sure what to say?

I remember Foster walking up to me at the pulpit and asking how he could support me in leadership. As a young clergyperson, he offered great encouragement and kindness. Even a decade after he passed, I remember his generous spirit! Holding his family in continued prayer....

Dr Marshal saved my life in 1975. I was born with a rare liver disease and required surgery at 8 weeks old and again at 8 months old. He will always remain an important part of my life and I am so happy that I was able to meet with him even after he was no longer my Dr.

Dearest Caroline and Family - I was very saddened to hear of the passing of your dad. He was certainly "one of a kind", and always made us laugh and smile in the office. He was an absolute joy to work with, and I consider it a great privilege to have known him. Keep alive his memories, they will sustain you during your darkest hours. Foster was instrumental in saving my life. (In 1980, as a child age 10, I was diagnosed with Cancer and Foster was my surgeon). I'll never forget this man! Best wishes to The Marshall Family, you are in our prayers...
