BORDEN, LOIS November 25, 1923 to November 19, 2012 Lois Borden, a longtime La Mesa resident, was 88. She was born in Glendale, California to Ruth and Karl Mouthrop. Mrs. Borden passed away at the San Diego Hospice, just yards from her childhood home in Hillcrest, following a fall. She lived in the same La Mesa home since 1958. Mrs. Borden graduated from San Diego High School in 1942. With first husband, Donald Pike, she had two daughters, Sharon Lawrence of Cameron Park, California, and Victoria Pynchon of Los Angeles. In the 1960s, she married second husband Kern Borden, a lithographer and photoengraver who invented the chemical compound SureKote. Upon retiring, the couple traveled the world. Mrs. Borden, who worked in retail, was a top-ranked Life Master Bridge player and expert. People seeking master status paid to be her Bridge partner. Her final companion was Paul Booth, whom she'd known since high school and with whom she reconnected at a high school reunion after both Booth and Borden's spouses had passed away. The pair, until her death, could be seen dancing at group functions. In addition to her daughters, she is survived by grandchildren Daniel Lawrence of Cameron Park and Cassandra Lawrence of Washington, D.C., stepdaughter Carole (Borden) Rodrigues of Hilo, Hawaii, sons-in-law Dennis Herron and Stephen Goldberg, and four step-grandchildren Tammy, Tia, Tiane, and Tarra. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the San Diego Hospice in Mrs. Borden's name.

Enjoyed knowing and playing bridge with Lois for the past 15+ year. She was not only an excellent bridge player but a wonderful person and a fine lady. I will miss her.

I met Lois about 6 years ago as a member of the social club, Widows or Widowers of San Diego. After a period of time, I was fortunate to become close friends of Lois and Paul Booth while attending a number of social events with WOW. I was so very impressed with how Lois and Paul would dine and dance and have a good time at the many WOW dinner/dances that we had every year. I know there were a lot of WOW members who were envious of the spirit and enthusiasm that Lois and Paul enjoyed. I was very lucky to be able to enjoy periodic get-togethers at her home where she was a very gracious host. I remember Lois recollecting lots of stories about her life and travels. She had a great memory and loved to describe her travels and adventures to interesting and exotic places. I will never forget some of the witty and entertaining stories about Lois's travels to Europe and the Far East. You could tell that Lois was very happy with the life she had experienced. You could easily tell that Lois was particularly proud of her daughter's, and their accomplishments. It is going to be difficult to think of this World without Lois, but I have very wonderful memories of her. As the saying goes, they don't make them like Lois anymore. Her infectious laughter and cheerful nature brought joy to many lives.

Dear Sharon and family,
So sorry to hear about your mom and I agree, she is probably playing bridge and beating whoever she plays with!!! Maybe even my mom. Prayers of comfort, strength, and support as you go through this difficult time.

Dear Vickie, Sharon and Cassandra,
Lois was one-in-a-million. Hopefully your sadness will eventually be replaced by the joy of wonderful memories of happy times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

I have many memories of your mom when we were kids living on the same street - practically living in each other's houses. I'm so glad I got to see her in April. She produced a beautiful family in all of you! My condolences for your loss. It's never easy.

My condolences to Vickie, Sharon and family. Having grown up a few houses away from Lois' family, her daughters, my sister and I were childhood friends and remain friends to this day. Lois was also a good friend to my mother. RIP, Lois Borden.
