ABELARDO (VAL) VILLARREAL Jr.

iconVILLARREAL Jr., ABELARDO (VAL) Oct. 5, 1930 to Dec. 23, 2012 Val passed away from respiratory failure after a short illness. He is survived by his son, Abel Villarreal of Las Angeles, CA, daughters Rossina Samples of Scottsdale AZ, and Angelica Lloyd of Del Mar, his loving partner Erika Kingett, and three grandsons. Val was born in southern Texas. He graduated from high school at 17 and enlisted in the US Air Force where he served as a radarman aboard B-29 bombers during the Korean War. He then enrolled at The Ohio State University where he earned a degree in Engineering Physics. He married Maria Candelaria Garcia in1957. They settled in San Diego in 1961 and raised their family in a home overlooking Mission Bay where he lived until his death. He worked as an electronics engineer at the Naval Command Control and Ocean Surveillance Center for almost 30 years where he developed submarine communication systems. He retired in 1996. In 2001 his beloved Maria died. Val continued his lifelong pursuit of learning at UCSD. He and Erika shared the rest of his life learning, traveling, and being with friends and family.
