ALICE M. ALVES

ALVES, ALICE M. Alice M Alves of Point Loma passed away at home on August 29, 2010, after a brief illness, she was surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 18, 1926, to John and Maria Mello in Visalia, CA. Alice grew up in Tulare, where she graduated from Tulare High School in 1944. The following year, Alice married her high school sweetheart John "Elmer" Alves. In 1947, Alice, Elmer and family relocated to San Diego. The settled in the Point Loma area, where they were active in the Portuguese Community. In 1970, Alice and Elmer were President of the yearly Portuguese Festa do Espirito. Alice was also involved in other Portuguese clubs including the Portuguese American Social and Civic Club, Allianca Azoreana, Cabrillo Civic Club #16. When Elmer retired from the tuna industry, they joined a new club, the Wandering Winnies RV group and were members for over 35 years. She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Elmer, mother Maria, father John, and grandson Christopher. She is survived by her son John III (Sue), daughter Julie, grandchildren John IV (Monique), Mishelle Lott (Joe), Travis and Michael (Holly), great-grandchildren Daisy, Brook, JJ, and Isabella, sister Mary Lira and brother Eddy Mello. Visitation Friday, September 10th, from 5-8 p.m. at Beardsley Mitchell Funeral Home, 1818 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 11th, 10:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Church, 1145 Evergreen St. Entombment to be held at Holy Cross Cemetery. Family suggests donations to Sharp Hospice Care.
