ALMA DORIS CHAPPELL

CHAPPELL, ALMA DORIS March 5, 1915 to January 1, 2013 Alma Doris Chappell was born in Ada, Oklahoma, to parents Joseph Deckert and Martha Alma Deckert. She was the youngest of nine children. She grew up with her mother in Gurthie, Oklahoma. She married Emil Hugh Chappell and they had two sons, Vernon and Kenneth. During WWII, they moved to Oklahoma City where her husband was an airplane mechanic at Tinker AFB, and she worked next door on the assembly line at Douglas Aircraft where the C-47's were built for the invasion of Europe. After the war, she worked in a department store, while taking night classes in accounting. She later had a job in a women's store as an accounting clerk. When her husband became the Service Manager at the Fred Jones Dealership in Norman, OK, she got a job as secretary to the pastor for the First Baptist Church. To see their son, Kenneth, who was with the Navy in San Diego, they came for a visit. When her husband got a job as Service Manager at the Service Station at MCRD, they decided to stay. She got a job with the accounting department at the first FedMart store. Later she moved to the new store at Kearny Mesa. She took the test with the San Diego Unified District and soon had a job as Financial Secretary at Clairemont High School. She served under four principals until she retired. In retirement, she kept active. She and her husband volunteered for Kaiser Hospital. She served as treasurer and developed their first budget. Later, she joined the Rolando Women's Club and was elected Treasurer. As a member, she wrote several short stories about her family that she entered into state wide completion with other women clubs. She was proud to win several ribbons with her stories. She is survived by her son, Kenneth; grandson, Craig and his wife Terri; great-grandsons, Troy and Aaron; and many nieces and nephews and their families. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, and from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at El Camino Memorial - Sorrento Valley Chapel, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA 92121 where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2013. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in her name to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego.
