McClain, Barbara Ann Stewart SAN CARLOS -- Barbara McClain passed away peacefully on March 22, 2013 with her son, daughter, and loving caregivers, Don and Savannah, by her side. Barbara was born in Northville, Michigan on October 29, 1930 to Louis and Marie Stewart. Growing up the daughter of a pharmacist, Barbara enjoyed working in the store's ice cream soda fountain. She had many fond memories of her small town upbringing and stayed in touch with several of her high school friends. College life took Barbara to Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti where she majored in Elementary Education and found a love of reading and piano. Following college, Barbara adventurously left Michigan for San Diego. She had never been to California, but remembered that her dad had said San Diego was "a beautiful city." Barbara taught first grade at Bostonia Elementary where she met fellow teacher Leo Tuck. Leo set up a blind date for Barbara, and his lifelong best friend, Bill McClain. On March 24, 1956. Bill and Barbara were married leading to a lifetime of happiness for both. Barbara left teaching to be a full time mom to daughter Lisa and son Bill. She loved being a homemaker and was an avid cook and entertainer. The family moved to San Carlos in 1965 where Barbara formed many lasting friendships. The family's annual Soup and Sandwich Party started out as a neighborhood event and soon grew to include friends from all over San Diego. Barbara was known for her holiday goodies and generosity of food and spirit. Volunteering was an important part of Barbara's life. As a member of the Juniors of Social Service she was introduced to the Sisters of Social Service and Camp Oliver. She dedicated herself to these charities which continued with her involvement in the Social Service Auxiliary. For nearly 40 years, Barbara was active with these organizations. As a parishioner of Mission San Diego, Barbara volunteered with the Mission Gala and in the Mission Gift Shop. She loved her Tuesdays in the gift shop with her dear friend Lynn Mooney where they enjoyed laughing and trying to figure out the new computer cash registers. Barbara found great joy contributing to these groups. Travel composed a large part of Barbara and Bill's later years. They loved cruising and traveling the grand cities of Europe. Some of her fondest memories included cruises with her entire family to Alaska and Mexico. Above all, Barbara loved her family and the times they were able to be all together. Barbara will be remembered for her warm heart and huge smile. Her generosity of spirit touched many. She is predeceased by the love of her life, and husband of 56 years, Bill McClain. Among those celebrating her life include daughter Lisa King (Jay), son Bill McClain (Robert Leyh), granddaughter Emma King and nephews Jay and Jeffrey Reynolds of Michigan. A funeral mass will be held at Mission San Diego on Friday, April 5th, at 9:30 a.m. with a celebration reception to follow at the family home in San Carlos.
