Barton, Donald Gy/Sgt USMC, Retired OCEANSIDE -- Don was born in Lapento, Ark., on February 19, 1921. He spent his childhood in and around Charleston, Mo. He graduated high school in 1939 and attended college at Missouri State. Don married his childhood sweetheart, Vivian Spires, in 1941 and immediately joined the USMC serving on board the USS Nevada throughout WWII
. During his career, he served in China witnessing the retreat of Chiang Kai Shek at very close range, and later served in Korea. He retired in April of 1961 at Camp Pendleton. After retiring from the Marines, Don was self- employed for another 20 plus years, eventually retiring in 1985. He enjoyed many years in retirement, traveling and spending time with his family. Don is survived by his sons, Camron and wife, Mary, and David and wife Judy; and daughter, Claudia Royer. Along with his children, he passes the torch to many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian; and son Bruce. Don died on March 29, 2013 and was laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery with full military honors.
