McGRATH, FRANCIS JOSEPH "MAC" February 6, 1922 to February 1, 2013 Mac McGrath of Imperial, CA passed away peacefully in La Jolla, CA after a short illness on February 1, 2013. He lived a full life that included 51 missions in P-38's in World War II in North Africa, Sicily and Italy; being a crop dusting pilot in the Imperial Valley for 40 years, as well as racing cars, including a 1955 Porsche Speedster, and Navion airplanes. He was adept at woodworking, playing musical instruments, writing poetry and appreciated classical literature and loved Shakespeare. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Imperial. He provided an exciting and wonderful family life for his children, piloting the family on numerous trips in the Navion around the United States and on adventures to Mexico and Baja California. He was preceded in death by his first wife, June; their infant son, Michael Francis; second wife, Patricia; grandson, Thomas McGrath Ready; daughter in law, Kristin; and his brother Dan. Mac is survived by his brother Bill (Maxine) of Portland, children Jean Froning (Otis) of San Diego, Patrick of Hawaii, and Dennis (Lonnie) of San Diego as well as two stepsons, Roy of Imperial and Joe of San Diego. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and numerous adoring nieces and nephews. There will be a celebration of his life at the Moose Lodge in Imperial, 2310 Myrtle Rd. on Saturday, February 16th, at noon.
