Johnson, Frank Georges Col. U.S. Army
(Ret) SAN DIEGO -- Retired Col. Frank G. Johnson passed away peacefully near his home in Rancho San Diego on July 20, 2013 in the loving arms of his family. Born in Portland, ME and the son of a World War I veteran, Frank joined the United States Army shortly after high school in 1951, and was subsequently accepted into Officer Candidate School. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1952 and shortly thereafter assigned his first leadership position in the Korean conflict
in 1953. During Frank's subsequent 30 year Army career which included active duty in Korea and Vietnam, he was awarded 13 different citations and decorations, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star
with Oak Leaf Clusters , "V" device for Valor and a Purple Heart
. His personal life during this time was no less eventful. He married the love of his life in 1956, his wife of 50+ years, and was a proud father to his two children, Frank Jr, and Carolyn. He earned a B.S. Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1968 followed by an MBA from George Washington University in 1973. During their lives together they enjoyed traveling the world; from cruises with friends to Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii to excursions to Europe, Egypt and China and annual camping trips with Frank Jr, and Carolyn. Frank was a skilled sailor, and relished his time on the water in his sailboat the "MAFI." Frank spent his life caring for his family and the troops that were put in his charge. He served his country with great honor and courage, and his family with love and kindness. He will truly be missed. Frank is survived by his son, Frank Jr.; his daughter, Carolyn; his son-in-law, Mark; his grandchildren, Trevor, Jessica and Sofia; and his best companion, his dog Taffy. Memorial Services and a celebration of Frank's life will be held Saturday, August 3rd, 11am at St. Luke's Catholic Church in El Cajon.
