HERBERT HYLAND "HY" MULVANY

MULVANY, HERBERT "HY" HYLAND Feb. 1, 1926 to Jan. 19, 2013 Hy Mulvany was born in Berkeley and raised in Oakland, CA. In 1945 Hy met Audrey Vevera, a UC Berkeley student - the love of his life - while on the Transcontinental Railroad, on his way back to New London, CT where he was a cadet at the US Coast Guard Academy. He graduated from the Academy in 1949. Audrey and Hy married a few days after their graduations - a union that spanned 56 years until Audrey's passing in 2005. During 29 years of service in the US Coast Guard, Hy flew search-and-rescue helicopters and fixed-wing planes. He had 2 tours of duty at the US Coast Guard Air Station San Diego - the last as the Commanding Officer. Hy retired as a Captain. He and Audrey returned to San Diego where they made their home in Point Loma. In June 2012, Hy moved to Fort Collins, CO to live with his daughter, Nancy. Both Hy and Nancy enjoyed living together and exploring the back roads of northern Colorado. The final chapter in Hy's adventurous life came to a close on January 19, 2013 when he passed away suddenly but peacefully in Fort Collins. In addition to Nancy, Hy is survived by his son Michael (Julianne); grandchildren - Kathryn Shain (Larry); Ryan Mulvany (Kristen); Matthew Mulvany; and great-grandson Kai Mulvany. No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the National Parks Foundation.
