Wirth, H.J. (Jack) POINT LOMA -- Herman John Wirth passed away on May 5, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, after succumbing to complications suffered in a fall a month earlier. Jack was born on May 6, 1923 in Boston, MA. He spent his childhood in Quincy, MA, spending summers sunbathing on Wollaston Beach. After high school, he joined the Air Force during WWII
. He married Sabra Helen Wales in New Mexico in 1947. After graduation from the University of New Mexico, the family moved to San Diego, and Jack worked for the Naval Electronics Lab (NEL) in Point Loma. He pioneered satellite communications for the Navy, becoming Division Head for Communications for many years. He had a stint at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe for a year in The Netherlands with his entire family. He retired from the civil service in 1987. Kathryn was born in 1950 in Albuquerque. John was born in San Diego in 1951, and Robert arrived in 1954. Throughout his life, Jack enjoyed traveling, working on the computer, and eating Ipswich clams (with bellies attached). The family vacations (with 16 members in tow) included trips to Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, and back to Europe. Sabra passed away in 1991. Jack remarried in 2007 to Juanita Gomez. Jack is survived by his wife, Juanita; three children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 2:00 pm at OB One (First Baptist) Church of Ocean Beach at 4790 Santa Monica Ave., Ocean Beach.
