JAMES PHILIP O'DONOGHUE

iconO'DONOGHUE, JAMES PHILIP Monsignor James Philip O'Donoghue, age 93, died December 13, 2012. He was born to Matthew and Mary O'Donoghue of Clifferna, Stradone, Cavan, Ireland in 1919. Educated first in Laragh and Oldcastle, Ireland, he enrolled at St. Finian's College, Mullingar, from 1934 to 1937. He then studied for the priesthood at St. Patrick's Seminary in Carlow, Ireland, between 1937 and 1943, with several intervening years spent at the North American College in Rome. He was incardinated into the Diocese of San Diego in 1942, prior to his ordination to the priesthood in 1943 at Carlow, Ireland, by the then-Bishop E.O. Callaghan. Father O'Donoghue's first assignments were to English Martyrs parish of Preston, England, from 1943 to 1945, followed by a year at St. Mary's, Laragh, Ireland, both locations as assistant pastor. He came to California in 1946, to minister as assistant pastor at St. John the Evangelist, San Diego. In 1949, he transferred to St. Francis de Sales, Riverside, serving as assistant pastor for two years. Then followed several months as administrator of Holy Rosary, San Bernardino. Father O'Donoghue served briefly as pastor of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, Crestline, in 1951, before moving into a four-year pastorate of St. Joseph, Big Bear Lake. He was next appointed pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Lakeside, where he ministered from 1955 to 1964. His final pastorship was at Our Mother of Confidence, San Diego, from 1964 to his retirement. In 1968, the role of diocesan Vicar for Religious in San Diego and Imperial counties was added to his responsibilities, continuing for several decades. He was named a monsignor in 1969. Additional responsibilities as Dean of the La Jolla Deanery and Episcopal Vicar for Catholics of La Jolla and Oceanside deaneries were added to him for three years beginning in 1977. He was appointed as Vicar General and as a diocesan Consultor also in 1977. In 1979, Msgr. O'Donoghue was elected to the Priests' Council and appointed to the Board of Educational Ministry. He retained the latter role until 1991. After retiring in 1990, Msgr. O'Donoghue served for a period as chaplain to the Serra Club East. The Vigil Service will be on Tuesday, December 18, at 7 p.m. at Our Mother of Confidence Church, 3131 Governor Drive, San Diego. The Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, December 19, at 11 a.m., also at Our Mother of Confidence. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
