JEANNE HOPPE

HOPPE, JEANNE Born August 12, 1925, in Los Angeles, Calif. Died Feb. 10, 2013, in San Diego After graduating from St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing, Jeanne became an avid traveler and adventurer, a passion that continued well into her 80s. She struck out to work in New York City and then London, England. Over the next decade she worked as a nurse in Hawaii, where she saw an ad in the local paper for nurses with a sense of humor and spirit of adventure for a two-year government job in Guam. She signed on and followed up the assignment with extensive touring in the Far East. Upon returning to the U.S., Jeanne worked in Oakland and San Diego before joining the Army Nurse Corps in 1959. She rose through the ranks. She served in Germany, Korea and Vietnam, where she participated in setting up the first MASH unit in the Mekong Delta. She retired in 1981 as a full colonel and chief nurse at Fort Ord, Calif. She returned to San Diego, where she lived with Carol Gable, her long-time friend and traveling companion. During one of her adventures 16 years ago, on a plane to Guadalajara, Mexico, she met James Carroll, another San Diegan who shared her passion for travel and adventure. They became friends and enjoyed traveling together and exploring arts and culture throughout the world, including one of their most memorable trips to India in their early 80s. Jeanne celebrated her 80th birthday by skydiving. Jim passed away in 2012 and Jeanne would always talk about how she missed her dancing and traveling buddy. Jeanne had many friends and an extended family including the Gables and Carrolls of San Diego. Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hoppe; her brother, Walter, a paratrooper, died on D-Day in Europe; and two sisters, Mildred and Kathleen, both nurses. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on March 2, 2013, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 4540 El Cerrito Drive, San Diego. Contributions may be made in Jeanne's name to AMEDD Museum, 2310 Stanley Road, Building 1046, San Antonio, TX; or the San Diego Humane Society, 5500 Gaines Street, San Diego, CA 92110.
