Julie Meilut Benedict

Julie Meilut Benedict, 83 POWAY -- Julie Meilut Benedict died on July 11, 2012 at home in Poway. She was born Meilut Zilis in April of 1929 in Chicago, Illinois. Upon graduating high school at 16, she worked as a copy girl and then as a cub reporter for the Chicago Tribune. In 1948, she married Russell Reed Benedict, who shared her passion for the World Federalist Movement. They worked as photojournalists in Europe, before returning to the U.S. in 1950 for the birth of their first child, Tevina. Upon moving to Poway, Julie worked for the North County and East County editions of the San Diego Independent newspaper from 1967 - 1970 and also served as the editor. From 1973 - 2011, she served as Procurement Advisor for the San Diego Workforce Partnership. She was awarded Proclamations by the City of San Diego, San Diego County and the 51st Congressional District designating May 29, 2009 and June 30, 2011 to be "Julie Benedict Day" in recognition of her service spanning four decades and her dedication to improving the lives of the underprivileged. Julie had been a member of the House of Lithuania Balboa Park's House of Pacific Relations, International Cottages since 1990 serving as President since 2002. She is survived by her sister, Paula Weaver; her nephew, David Weaver; daughters, Stephanie Benedict, Barbara Benedict, Marianna (Benedict) Bacilla; her son of the heart, Mel McClain; grandchildren, Francesca (Norman) Williams, Daniel Norman, Giovanni Norman, Alexandra Norman and Erica Benedict-Barta; her great-grandchildren, Rebekah Williams, Rachel Williams, Rene Williams and Gavin Daley. A viewing will be held at Poway Bernardo Mortuary in Poway on Sunday, July 22nd from 5-8pm. Funeral Services will be Monday, July 23rd at 10am at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Poway.
