Schickler, Maureen Catherine SAN DIEGO -- Maureen Manahan Schickler passed away peacefully, with family members by her side on March 21, 2013 after a long illness. Maureen Catherine Manahan was born on August 9, 1932 in Chatfield, MN. She was the first born of five children of J. Walter Manahan and Marguerite McCarthy Manahan. Maureen graduated from the Villa Maria Academy, Frontenac, MN, in 1950. She received her Registered Nursing Degree at St. Mary's (now the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, MN, in 1953. Maureen worked as a nurse at the University of Minnesota Hospital in the Twin Cities. She married Herbert Schickler in 1957, they moved to San Diego, CA, in 1958. She worked for over five decades while raising their three children, Julie, Joseph and Patrick. Much of her nursing work in San Diego was at Sharp Hospital where she worked well into her retirement years. Maureen was active as a volunteer with various civic and cultural organizations in the San Diego area, including the San Diego Symphony. Maureen was an avid reader and traveler, she took many trips with family, friends, and neighbors. She traveled to Europe, Southeast Asia, Russia, Cuba and Central and South America. Maureen is survived by her daughter Julie and husband John Shryock, two grand- daughters, Jennifer and Kelly Shryock, and her two sons, Joseph and wife Christine Schickler and Patrick Schickler. She is also survived by her sister Ruth Russell, of Ponte Vedra, FL, and by her three brothers, Thomas Manahan, of Sioux Falls, SD, David Manahan, OSB, of Collegeville, MN, and Martin Manahan, of Walla Walla, WA. A private family gathering will be held in her honor on April 15th.
