Brown, Melville Steuart 1926 ~ 2013 LA JOLLA -- Melville Steuart Brown "Stu" passed away at home on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, of brain cancer. He was born on March 26, 1926, in Washington, D.C., the fourth child of Halbert and Oma Brown. Steuart attended schools in Washington, D.C. He loved sports, particularly baseball and football, and was bat boy for the Washington Senators for a time. He graduated from Wilson High School and entered the army
in 1944, following his brother, an air force pilot who was killed in action the same year. By December, he was sent to Belgium, where he was captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. A prisoner for some months, Steuart escaped, and found his way back to the front lines where he was hospitalized and returned to the States for recovery. Steuart tried out for the Washington Redskins and was offered a position, but decided his body shouldn't take that kind of punishment. He attended the University of California. Afterwards he joined Merrill Lynch & Co. and moved to La Jolla, California. Over the next 60 years he was in the investment business in various firms. Steuart loved to play tennis, golf, travel, and give advice to anyone and everyone. He loved his dogs, his roses, and a good party. A charter member of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club
, Stu was so proud of his club. Steuart was preceded in death by his brother Halbert, Jr., and his sister Jeannette. He is survived by his sister Marion, his wife, Nancy, son Christopher (Arlene), stepsons Lars (Anne) and Anders (Julie), six grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. A special thanks to his wonderful caregivers. A memorial service will be held at St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in La Jolla, on Friday, July 12th, at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be at Miramar National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Foundation.
