Shirley Ann Tollgaard

Tollgaard, Shirley Ann 1932 - 2013 LA MESA -- Shirely was born on January 11, 1932 in Hancock, Michigan this is in the upper peninsula of Michigan, so she is natural born "Ooper". She attended High School in Minneapolis and Pensacola, Florida. The year was 1949, when Shirley met her true love Elmer "Smokey" Tollgaard while she was in nursing school and he was in flight training. They married in 1950 and had 62 crazy years of marriage. She had three children and was a teacher of handicapped kids. She traveled with her Navy husband to various places, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Hawaii, California, and etc. Her extended family included handicapped children, Navy friends and many stray animals. She passed away on Tuesday, March 19th after a 10 year battle with breat cancer. She was incredibly talented in art and loved to cook for crowds. She had her characteristic sense of humor right to the end. She is survived by her husband "Smokey", daughter Kim (Ken Brean), son Eric (Marti), six grandchildren, and one great-grandson. A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, April 6th at 3:30 p.m., College Lutheran Church, 6650 Montezuma Road, San Diego. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to VFW 1774/ American Legion 282, 8118 University Ave, La Mesa, 91942.
