Johnston, Thomas Arnold 09/19/1927 - 03/17/2013 CARLSBAD -- Thomas A. Johnston, 85, of Carlsbad, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 17, 2013. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio he met and married his wife, Shirlee on July 1, 1950. A graduate of J. F. Rhodes HS, he enlisted in the U.S.C.G. Academy. He earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Case Institute of Technology and a Certificate of Nuclear Engineering from ORSORT. He was employed with Thompson Products, VEA Chemical Company, and Thompson Ramo Wooldridge, Inc., before moving the family to La Jolla, CA in 1960. Employed at General Atomics until 1986, he managed the HTGR program, served as VP, and was a consultant and board member until his death. Tom enjoyed playing tennis, and was a talented watercolor artist. He was a world traveler and especially enjoyed the family trip to Hawaii on his 50th wedding anniversary. Preceded in death by his wife Shirlee, he is survived by his children Scott (Kathy), Jennifer (Dan), Amie (Sal); grand- children, Erin, Chelsea, Kelly, Pamela, Bill, Bo, Molly, and Dustin; great-grandchildren, Roxanne, Olivia, Ember, and Isabel; relatives, Penny, Marc and Marilyn.
